Dalston Cross AHU Upgrade
Client Brief
Our client tasked us with assessing and improving the performance of four air handling units (AHUs) that had been in service for over 15 years. The aim was to restore full operational efficiency, improve control, and reduce long-term running costs.
The objective was clear — to assess their current performance, identify any operational issues, and provide a roadmap to restore efficiency and reliability.
Client
Dalston Cross
Project Type
AHU Upgrade
Location
London, UK
Our Approach
Following our initial survey, we implemented a full refurbishment and upgrade programme, including:
- New EC fan upgrades delivering 30–40% energy savings
- Installation of new DX coils for improved cooling efficiency
- Removal of old on/off DX heat pumps and replacement with new variable-speed heat pumps, offering precise control and further energy savings
- Replacement of all dampers to ensure optimal airflow regulation
- Full AHU deep clean to restore hygienic operation
- Replacement of all filters to improve indoor air quality and system performance
- Installation of new Trend controls for enhanced monitoring and system optimisation
Outcome
The project delivered a full refurbishment of all mechanical and electrical components, effectively extending the operational life of the AHUs for many years to come. Upgrades to fans, heat pumps, and controls have significantly reduced energy usage, delivering improved performance and reliability.
The energy efficiency gains achieved are delivering a payback period of less than four years on investment, with savings in line with projections and ongoing operational cost reductions.
Beyond financial benefits, the client now enjoys:
- Better environmental performance through reduced carbon output
- Enhanced occupant comfort via improved temperature and airflow control
- Extended equipment lifespan through proactive refurbishment
